Diageo has already sold its 80.4 % equity stake in Guinness Ghana Breweries plc to Castel Group.
On 28 January 2025 the deal was first announced. The deal has now officially been closed with majority stake of the stocks of the listed Ghanaian brewery passing on to Castel Group, a beverage international group with operations throughout Africa.
Although it has sold its equity share, Diageo still owns the Guinness brand and other brands which the Guinness Ghana brewery continues to get. These companies will remain brewed, produced and distributed within the Ghanaian territory by Guinness Ghana under the terms of a long term licensing and royalty decision.
Guinness Ghana will continue being the production partner of the core portfolio of Diageo in the local market. This comprises of Guinness and other Diageo brands which had previously been manufactured in Ghana before the transaction.
Besides the local production, Guinness Ghana would also remain as the distributor of the international premium spirits of Diageo in Ghana. This implies that products like Johnnie Walker, Baileys and other Diageo worldwide brands will remain on sale in Ghana using identical business lines.
The transfer of ownership pattern will enable Diageo to concentrate in brand stewardship and Castel group assume power on operations of the brewery.
The sale of Diageo Guinness Ghana is yet another move by the company to reorient itself in the West African market in a way that keeps the local production shifting while offering a new form of ownership in the region with the help of the Castel presence.
The sale of Diageo Guinness Ghana has now been finalised and new licensing agreements will guarantee the further availability of Diageo brands in Ghana with Castel running the brewery.
