A New Wave of M&A Reshapes the Greek Supermarket Sector
Masoutis aims to acquire ANEDIK Kritikos as supermarket consolidation heats up in Greece’s competitive market.
SUPERMARKET

After a quiet stretch, the supermarket sector in Greece is moving again. A new round of acquisitions is starting to change the balance of power in the market.
Masoutis Eyes Major Expansion
Thessaloniki-based Masoutis is in talks to take over rival ANEDIK Kritikos. The agreement signed earlier this year is not final — it’s non-binding, and Masoutis is still going through due diligence. But if it goes through, the impact will be big.
The deal could push Masoutis into the position of third or even second largest player in Greece, depending on final turnover figures. It would also give the chain a stronger footprint in southern Greece, especially in the Athens area, where it first expanded five years ago.
Industry estimates suggest turnover could approach €2 billion. That would put Masoutis right up against AB Vassilopoulos and Lidl Hellas.
Kritikos Brings More Than Supermarkets
Kritikos isn’t just a standard supermarket chain. It has a wide network of convenience stores, many with longer opening hours. These formats are becoming more important as big chains look for ways to meet changing shopping habits. Extended hours, smaller footprints, quick access — all things that fit into busy urban lifestyles.
M&A Momentum Building
The agreement fits a big picture. Other supermarkets are also acquired, some close, others are still in conversation. After years of slow activity, chains now see ready to make big tricks. Rising costs, pressure from discount shop and the need to keep prices competitive push them to grow rapidly.
Business and Shoppers
For suppliers and business partners, large supermarket groups mean less and work with large buyers. Orders can be large, but the interaction can be more centralized. For regular shop owners, it can give more stores with well -known names and possibly better offers. But some small local shops can disappear as big chains get stronger.
Looking Ahead
The Masoutis-Kritikos agreement is given a lot of attention in the industry. If it moves forward, it can trigger more appointments and can make Greece's supermarket market a more concentrated place.
