Target has expanded its Store Director Development Program across the U.S. The six-month leadership course is now open to nearly 2,000 store directors.
The program was developed by Target store directors to train others in the same role. It combines in-person workshops, peer sessions, digital exercises, and store-based assignments. Participants take time away from daily work to focus on leadership, team building, and operations.
Each store director begins with a kickoff workshop at Target’s Minneapolis headquarters. Peer groups of five meet regularly to work through guided material. Digital tasks are completed between sessions. District Senior Directors provide check-ins and support throughout the program.
The pilot phase showed strong results. Over 90% of participants said it helped improve job performance. A 36% increase in personal development scores was reported after the program. Nearly all directors formed peer networks they plan to continue using. The intent to stay at Target reached 97%.
The program was shaped by feedback from active store leaders. It is built around real store challenges and tested through direct frontline input. Target confirmed the initiative will continue as part of its long-term leadership plan.
Target runs nearly 2,000 stores nationwide. The Store Director Development Program now serves as a core part of its store leadership strategy.
The Target Store Director Development Program focuses on practical learning, peer connection, and leadership growth in frontline retail.
